Dropping Courses

What if I Missed the Deadline?

At this point, the midsemester deadline has passed. You may still be able to drop a single course or withdraw for academic reasons using the One-Time Exception (OTE) if you have not used it previously. See below for more info.

There are also potential options for Q-dropping or Withdrawing for medical reasons that have come up past the deadline. You will need to discuss these options with an advisor.

Drop-Ins for OTE/Late Drops & Withdrawals

The BBA Advising Team will be hosting drop-ins to discuss One-Time Exception and Late Drops and Withdrawals on Dec 6th from 9-11:45am & 1-4pm.

You can access drop-ins during the times listed above via this link: https://bit.ly/McCombsQLess

One-Time-Exception (OTE) to Q Drop or Withdraw

One time during a student’s academic career, they are allowed to Q Drop or do a Semester Withdrawal after the university’s mid-semester deadline.  Student’s using their OTE for a Q Drop should be aware that this does count towards the 6 maximum Q Drop limit for student’s attending Texas schools.  A student can use their OTE after the university deadline for one of the following:

  • Q Drop one course
  • Semester Withdrawal for all courses

For clarification, a student may not use their OTE to change a course to or from a pass/fail basis.

If a student would like to use their OTE this semester, they must read the ramifications section below before initiating the process. NOTE: If you have already used your six academic Q drops, you are not eligible to use this OTE. Q drops used spring 2020, fall 2020, and spring 2021 were considered non-academic Q drops due to COVID exceptions and do not count towards the 6 total Q drop maximum.

DEADLINE:

Monday, December 6, 2021 before 5pm Central Standard Time (this is the last day of classes for the semester)

OTE for Q-drops:

Although we encourage students to speak to an academic advisor about the possible impact of using an OTE, students who are not in iMPA or CBHP are able to initiate an OTE Q drop on their own through the below website.   Students in iMPA or CBHP should speak with an advisor in their program office to discussion possible impact

OTE for Semester Withdrawals:

All students wishing to use their OTE for a semester withdrawal must speak with an advisor to complete a university-mandated withdrawal checklist.

Ramifications

You will receive a “Q” as your grade in the course and it will show on your transcript. Your GPA is not affected by a Q. You are only allowed six Q-drops while you are an undergrad at any public Texas institution.

If Q-dropping a course will put you below 12 hours, you will be considered a part-time student. This could affect the following:
