Canfield BHP Leadership Opportunities

Current Canfield BHP students are encouraged to get involved and volunteer for one or multiple student positions. Some positions are paid and some are unpaid. Some require a commitment of months and some of only one day. We encourage you to check out the list below and fill out the Canfield BHP Common Application in the fall/spring to apply. Each position description will have a note indicating how you can apply. 

Volunteer Positions

Discover Canfield BHP Co-Chair

Two students will be selected for this role. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply. This position is unpaid.
Co-chairs plan, market, and supervise all the events of Discover BHP, which is BHP's main annual recruiting event for admitted students and their parents. The event takes place in March and significant planning is required months before the event.

DEI Committee Member

Three to four students from each class are selected by CBHP staff and DEI Committee Co-Leads. The purpose of the committee is to work on initiatives to promote an inclusive culture within the existing CBHP community through awareness, discussion, and other activities as well as increase diversity in CBHP recruitment. Meeting times for DEI Committee are TBD, subjective to member schedules, and they typically occur twice a month.

Steering Committee Member

Steering Committee consists of three to four student representatives per class. Applicants will be selected by the Steering Committee chairs. This position is unpaid. The committee has regular meetings every other Tuesday from 5-6 pm. Steering Committee members serve to foster communication between faculty, staff, students, and alumni creating a strong unified Canfield BHP culture through joint discussions and events.

Ethics Board Member

Three to four students per class will be selected by the Ethics Board chair and BHP staff. This position is unpaid. The committee has regular meetings every other Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 pm. Members work closely with professors, alumni, and other BHP student groups to increase the ethical standards of BHP. They have the opportunity to work on ethical case studies and projects, be involved in marketing and communications, plan ethical events, and contribute to the board's strategic direction.

Peer Advisor

Around 10 students per year serve as peer advisors. Many continue for multiple years, leaving 2-3 spaces per year to fill. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. This position is paid. PAs are current BHP students who answer general questions about BHP, schedule appointments with academic advisors, and manage the front desk of the BHP Office. They often take calls from prospective students or parents interested in BHP, as well as work on projects for the office. Weekly hours are assigned based on availability. PAs typically work 6-8 hours per week. They are also required to attend bi-weekly staff meetings.

Summer Peer Advisor

Around 5 students per year serve as summer peer advisors. All classes of students are eligible to apply. This position is paid. PAs are current BHP students who answer general questions about BHP, schedule appointments with academic advisors, and manage the front desk of the BHP Office. They often take calls from prospective students or parents interested in BHP, as well as work on projects for the office. This position also assists new BHP students during summer orientation. Weekly hours are assigned based on availability.

Peer Mentor

Twelve students per year serve as peer mentors. Rising juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. This position is paid. Peer Mentors assist incoming freshmen in acclimating to the BHP. Mentors facilitate student success by fostering positive individual and small group interaction at Leadership Kickoff, in BA 101H, and in Wednesday Seminars.  Mentors inform new students of relevant university, college, and program-specific resources and processes; lead small-group and class-wide events and presentations; encourage and support new students throughout their first semester; model appropriate behavior as a BHP student; inspire best practices, accountability, and transparency; model self-assessment and exploration; and encourage ethical decision-making. 

Peer Mentors are required to attend Leadership Kickoff, Monday BA 101H class meetings, Wednesday seminars, and weekly peer mentor staff meetings. They are also asked to meet with mentees individually and organize social events throughout the semester.

Recruiters

Four students will be selected to serve as recruiters. Only sophomores, juniors and seniors who have already served as recruiting liaisons will be eligible. This position is paid. BHP Recruiters help sell the program to prospective students and parents through information sessions, recruiting events, and hometown high school visits. This position requires a previous role as a recruiting liaison and requires thorough, up-to-date knowledge of the program, the university, and statistics. Recruiters are required to lead BHP information sessions on Mondays and Fridays and attend various recruiting events. They are also asked to attend regularly scheduled meetings with the BHP staff.

Recruiting Liaisons

Four students per year serve as recruiting liaisons. Freshmen and sophomores are eligible to apply. This position is unpaid. Recruiting liasions are trained throughout the fall and spring and are placed in a pool to become a paid BHP recruiter for the following semester. It is required to be a recruiting liasion in order to be considered for a paid recruiter position. Students may participate in taking prospective students to a BHP course, attending recruiting events, hosting BHP Information Sessions, conducting hometown high school visits and answering various questions about the BHP and UT. Liaisons are asked to participate in various activities with prospective and admitted high school students.

Hometown Recruiters

All classes of students are eligible for this unpaid position and there is no limit to the number selected. This position is unpaid. Hometown Recruiters will be expected to visit one or two of their local high schools sometime during the fall semester, winter break or spring semester to speak about BHP, McCombs and UT. Hometown recruiters are asked to attend one of the fall semester training sessions and lead information sessions in their hometown at a time convenient for them during the fall and spring semester as well as winter break.

Research Interest Group (RIG) Mentor

Two students per year serve as RIG mentors. This position is paid. RIG Mentors are BHP juniors or seniors with research experience who collaborate to plan weekly seminars for BHP freshmen and sophomores who are interested in pursuing research. Mentors invite speakers from relevant offices, facilities, and campus organizations in order to expose lower division students to the opportunities, resources, and people who might help them forge their own research path. RIG mentors will work 4 hours per week during the fall semester. Some planning will also be required during the summer months.

Sophomore Social Co-Chairs

Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and returning seniors are eligible for this position. This position is unpaid. Co-chairs plan, advertise, and oversee Sophomore Social, which is held on the second class day in the evening as a welcome event for new and returning BHP sophomores. Co-chairs may also facilitate "Sophomore Buddies" to connect new BHP sophomores with other members of the sophomore class. Time commitment varies. An average of one hour per week planning during the summer (position does not require you to be in Austin over the summer). The co-chairs must attend the event, which is approximately 3 hours in the evening on the first day of school.

Leadership Kickoff Co-Chairs

Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and returning seniors are eligible for this position. This position is unpaid. Co-chairs plan and oversee the Freshman Leadership Kickoff, the official induction into the BHP. While staff oversee venue and vendor selection, the co-chairs design the schedule and team-building activities to allow incoming freshmen to get to know their peers, mentors, faculty and staff. Time commitment varies. An average of one hour per week planning during the summer (position does not require you to be in Austin over the summer). The co-chairs must attend the weekend-long event at the beginning of the school year.<

Make-a-Mark Committee Member

Eight to ten students per year will be selected to serve on this committee. Only seniors are eligible. This position is unpaid. Make-a-Mark is the BHP Senior Class&rsquo; annual giving campaign supporting the Business Honors Program and the Make-a-Mark Scholarship. Committee members are responsible for planning and coordinating the giving campaign, and coordinating senior social campaign events. Committee members must attend bi-weekly meetings starting in January and moving into weekly meetings starting in April. They must also attend the 4 hour finale event in May.

Sophomore Admit Buddies

Ten to twelve students per year will be selected to serve as sophomore admit buddies. Only rising sophomores are eligible. This position is unpaid. Sophomore Admit Buddies attend the Sophomore Admit Dinner (night before school starts) and Sophomore Social (first class day in the evening) to welcome newly admitted sophomores to BHP. Beyond these 2 events, Sophomore Admit Buddies should regularly reach out to the new sophomores to invite them to connect to the BHP community through social media, other BHP events (including a potential "Buddy Mixer" held later in the fall semester), study groups, etc. The position will require approximately 4 hours during the first week of school. Additional hours will vary.

Interdisciplinary Case Competition Co-Chair

BHP will once again hold an interdisciplinary case competition for BHP students, CS students and Engineering students. We are looking for two dynamic leaders who have participated in numerous case competitions to plan and execute this unique competition. The competition will be held in late-February. Co-chairs need to be available for planning in January over the winter break, but this can be done remotely. Only juniors may apply.
