Mandatory Steps
To be eligible to apply, students must attend an information session and meet with a semester program advisor before the relevant application deadline.
Before You Apply
Info Sessions
If you’re interested in studying abroad on a Semester Program, the first mandatory step is attending an info session.
Advising Appointments
After you attend an information session, you can schedule your required advising appointment with a BBA International Programs Coordinator.
Before the appointment, you should:
- Think about your goals
- Start some basic online research, including our website and blog
- Explore the My Credit Abroad Database
During the meeting, we will discuss:
- Your major, course planning and the best program locations for you
- Application process
- Scholarship opportunities and funding
- Additional study abroad resources
- Expectations (for you and your parents)
Application Deadlines
You will need to plan far in advance if you want to participate in a BBA Semester Program.
Application Process
Application Fees
All applications are completed in the MyAbroad Portal. Affiliate applications may also require you to fill out an additional Google Form. Once authorized (for both program types) you can access the MyAbroad online application. All programs have a $75 non-refundable application fee.
Program Code
All our Exchange Program codes start with “15.” Some partner schools have more than one program at UT, so if you want a BBA Exchange Program, make sure to select the “15xxxx” code. For affiliate programs, they begin with “20”. Please review the program page for the program code or application code.
For Exchange Application essay only
Prompts for Program Choice:
We want to see that you have researched the exchange partner, its location, and how it directly aligns with your personal, academic and professional goals.
- From your research about the exchange partner, what particular programs, and/or facilities do you hope to benefit from? Please avoid generic reasons, such as the program offers courses you need for your degree. Many of our exchange programs fulfill this need. Or generic statements, such as it is a top business college with renowned faculty and innovative programs.
- How will this international experience directly correlate to your academic and/or professional goals? Please avoid generic sentiments; for example, having a global perspective in my field will be valuable in my future profession, but rather provide specific examples.
- What about the location (e.g., city, country), including local culture, organizations, and attractions, is relevant to your academic, professional, and personal interests? If you have any personal connection to the location, please share about that direct connection. Remember, we have multiple exchange programs in Spain, France, England and Hong Kong, so differentiate about the city or region for these cases.
- Immersion in the local language may be a reason for program choice. But bear in mind that for Spanish, French, German, and Chinese, we have multiple exchange programs where these are the local languages spoken, so that would not be a specific enough reason for your individual program choice in these cases.
Prompts for Candidacy:
We would like to know if you have the skills and experience to succeed in one of our BBA exchange programs.
- Why are you the right candidate for this program, and what sets you apart from other applicants? Please avoid generic statements like I have a 4.0 GPA and can balance work and studies.
- Share about a time when you had to adapt to a new environment. What mechanisms did you employ to help you successfully adjust and cope with change?
- What type of leadership experience have you had at work, in the community, or a student organization? Please focus on interpersonal aspects, such as your ability to motivate others or manage responsibilities. You can detail projects and achievements on your resume.
- Share your experience interacting with and building relations with people different from you (abroad or in the US).
- Have you been involved with any international communities on campus or in the US (student organizations, volunteer work, community engagement, etc.)? If so, how?
- How did you improve a situation when your experience did not meet your anticipated expectations?
Enter your essay into the web application form, maximum length of two pages.
Letters of Recommendation
Applicants must use the online Reference Questionnaire Form within the UT “MyAbroad” application portal. Full instructions are accessible after starting the online application itself.
Reference guidance:
Two letters of recommendation are required to apply for BBA Semester Programs.
- One recommendation must be from a McCombs professor (Freshman applicants may use any UT professor).
- The second recommendation should be from a supervisor/employer, advisor, or another instructor.
Note: If this recommender does not have a UT EID, they will not be able to access the online recommendation form. Instead, they should email their recommendation to BBA International Programs.
Important things to consider:
Request recommendations at least 2-4 weeks in advance to make sure you give your recommenders enough notice and the selection committee receives your letters on-time.
Language Evaluation
Only students applying to foreign language programs (Universidad de Deusto in Spain and PUC in Chile) need a language evaluation.
Additional Materials
Resume: Write your EID and semester abroad in the top right corner
Degree plan: Submit a degree plan (not audit), with completed requirements checked off, and next semester’s tentative schedule
Notifications and Next Steps
- Notification of selections will be by e-mail, about 3-4 weeks after the application deadline closes.
- Secondary deadline applications are reviewed on a first-submitted, first-considered basis.
- Students typically have one week to accept or decline their placement and confirm participation.
- Applications to host schools are available after acceptance. Students must complete and send to their host school, along with all requested materials.
For all destinations, students will need a valid passport. If you don’t have one, or if yours will expire before the end of the time you’re planning to be abroad, you should apply for one now. Texas Global Passport Services can process passport applications.
Study abroad in most countries also requires a residency permit or a visa. You need to have a passport before you can apply for either a residency permit or visa. Allow time, because it may take up to 12 weeks to apply for a visa. Students are responsible for contacting the appropriate consulate or embassy for guidelines and to secure the necessary paperwork.
